on FurAffinity in financial distress, uspol, queerphobia
Show content

So the FA financial distress is another indicator that furries are going to be or are already the next proxy for queerphobic fear-mongering in the US, huh.

The TL;DR is that payment processors have come to FA and told them "listen here buddy, furries hugging, fat furs, or furries being naked with no genitals is too risqué for us. You gotta stop that or we stop paying you for the advertisements you display." This is, of course, a bar impossible and morally too reprehensible to clear, hence FA now being without a major source of income.

This story comes out after furries have been name-dropped up to the fucking senate. Furries have been called "not trustworthy to be air line pilots" recently, while a representative was yapping bigoted nonsense with the "pregnant man emoji" printed out on a board behind him. There are precedents for bills by right-wing legislators targeting furries specifically (but until this year without getting any traction; remember the "litter box" moral panic?)

This designation of furries as a "weird and not trustworthy demographic" is, of course, thinly veiled queerphobia.

Every time you mention the need for general GUI improvements in Linux, a bell rings in the GIMP headquarters specifically and a brigade will stream out to downvote your comment.

As someone who technically has multiple i don't think expensive analog point-and-shoots are a good investment in 2026, mostly for two reasons
- they tend to be fragile and often seem to cling on life out of sheer luck, how they made it this far is anyone's best guess
- they often barely communicate what they are doing, and you don't have that much control on it.
now this applies to the cheaper point-and-shoots too; but it's a cheap laugh and if it breaks then so be it. but as you go up the foodchain that's a lot of responsibility you are putting on a cheaply build motorised piece of plastic from the 1990's.

What i'd recommend instead is the "dslr-without-the-d". Get one in the brand you already have lenses for, so a nikon or a canon or a pentax it does not matter a lot. They are transparant about their settings, have good auto settings, communicate what they are doing, you can see through the lens and if it breaks there are trillions of those on the e- of bay. And they are cheap, especially for the feature set.

You loose a bit of convenience (some of them are quite big) but i think they have a lot of value to them otherwise, and as you start experimenting you're not going to be quite as limited.

Anyways those are my two cents. i will still continue shooting my z70 with it's 28mm lens just like i'll continue shooting my ricoh r1, i just think one of them would be replaced if it breaks and it ain't the ricoh.
