language evolution is fascinating

a favorite anecdote is we usually think of the term "shark" in "poolshark" "cardshark" etc as derived from the fish

no

the hustlers came first

the fish was named after the hustlers

we used to call them dogfish or tiburon as a loanword from spanish

but then we congealed around the concept that these fish were predators, like con men and scoundrels

and "shark" in english is from german schurke or dutch schurk: villain

I find it _interesting_ that most modern portrayals of fairy tales involve kings, knights, princesses and so forth - the privileged aristocratic classes on top of the social pyramid. Even if the protagonist of such a tale is poor, they are still secretly from privileged parents, and their story tends to be about reclaiming their "rightful" (i.e. privileged) place in society.

Meanwhile, the _vast_ majority of German folk tales I have read feature peasant protagonists. Nobles _might_ appear, but they are the villains as often as they are a force for "good".

Reframing fairy tales to focus on protagonists of privileged birth and relegating low-born characters to sidekicks and background characters was a _choice_. It's so pervasive nowadays that most modern-day storytellers don't even realize that they are making this choice, since they have accepted this as "normal". But it is a choice nonetheless.

And if we are telling stories of our own, we need to ask ourselves what choices we are making when developing our protagonists.

Lynx on rails 🐱🚄🐾

Went to the national park last weekend and took steam trains for 6 hours straight. Made for some cool photos!

I don't get to shoot landscape pics often these days so this felt quite refreshing

Photoshoot showcase:
More distractions from EF content, this time featuring Luc - an Enfield local to Dresden. I caught this usually shy creature on a rainy afternoon in Dresden's "City park".
Hes quite comfortable with the less than optimal weather, prefers to lurk in the shadows and hide in foggy undergrowth. Only to occasionally appear in one's peripheral vision.

Again with some creative™ descriptions in the alt text.

(Luc is friendly and not at all evil btw)
