Email address should be able to have paths.
I should be able to enter my email address as alice@foobar.egg/restaurant/Seattle/hotel/cutclub

I'm well aware of plus operators, I use them frequently when I don't trust websites or I want to have 17 twitter/bluesky accounts registered to the same email address

but I want paths

@kawa those are different! they're for hinting where the user might live, rather than disambiguating a subset of the user

@foone what stops you from using paths in the local-part though

like, if you don't want the plus, set your Postfix recipient_delimiter to "/" or "+/" and it will [well, should] accept "alice/foo/bar@baz" in the same way it accepts the plus operator

(our work mail server uses colon for this...)

then make procmail/maildrop/sieve directly translate $EXTENSION to a corresponding IMAP folder (which I'm sure I've seen people do) so that "alice/foo/bar@" gets delivered to ~/Mail/.foo.bar/

@grawity @foone I use - as my delimiter because a lot of things have decided that preserving the +-part is unnecessary because the same companies that want to shove utm_source and other URL tracking everywhere can't stand to think that their data reselling could ALSO be tracked

@foone I've seen some oldschool ham radio packet BBS mail stuff that had manual paths. So funky
