@sodiboo @lily @chjara clippy is probably the worst symbol to use for it tbh
he was introduced at a time when microsoft was using their position as the pc os vendor monopolist to dictate how the web was going to be run
similarly they also had a market dominating position on office products with microsoft office at that point. it was also continuously expanded with more and more Junk that nobody uses to justify more upgrades (=costs for the user)
clippy was one of those additions. ostensibly added to assist with navigating the mess microsoft has created. nobody wanted it. it also didn’t work well. it was considered annoying and people mainly wanted it gone
the main difference is that yes it didn’t spy on you and sell that data to microsoft, but that would have just not been feasible back then. the reason why pervasive data collection and phoning home with it became a thing is the proliferation of always-available high speed internet connections nobody would mind a couple hundred kilobytes being used of. the 90s were just way too early for that.

@flesh this idea flies in the face of Calvinist/puritan work ethic however, which has became culturally ingrained in certain places. It is also frequently used to attack disabled folks, belittling their inability to do something as a personal failure.
And I felt like the argument I read was written in the same Calvinist/puritan mindset just with the arrows reversed. you aren't bad for using labor-saving tools, but instead you using them means that you have Good Reasons for it, such as being disabled

Yeah. I intentionally avoided commenting on the quality of the output, it is also not particularly relevant. My point is more that i believe it to be human nature to avoid doing things not considered enjoyable. Most technology (that hasn't been built with the intent of harming another physically) has been invented to get closer to that. so using technology that you personally believe will require less labor on your end is at face value a rational decision, even if you are misinformed about the tech's capabilities
