@hzulla Cron, of course, dates back to a world in which:
- computers were a significantly smaller part of the load on the power grid
- we didn't have tightly synchronized clocks everywhere (no NTP yet)
- we didn't have architectures in which power consumption was as tightly linked to computational load
Software often outlives all sorts of assumptions!

@Yoshi defining syntax without semantics makes json IMO useless since every single implementation can implement it however it pleases, which isn’t even just a theoretical concern because maliciously formatted json documents do just parse differently between different json parsers and since every json parser i have used accepts such constructions silently there really isn’t a good way to find it out
anyways regardless nobody has gotten all the answers right yet

it took a while, but the bash script i wrote to find the most popular article category on wikipedia by curling every single article has finally finished. no i don't know what a "database dump" is. i can now reveal that the most popular category by far is 429 Too Many Requests

@miifox it’s the same kind of greed as single use vapes basically, why sell you a power bank once when they can sell you a power bank every time. the chemistry is going to be the same because rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are just that good. and the electronics for charging it is pennies. but they only get to sell that one once every couple of years instead of once every time you need it
