Horses man. Horses are crazy. Evolved in the Americas, and spread to Eurasia while the continents were joined. Then went extinct in America, about when humans first arrived, so maybe hunted as food or we just out-competed them or messed things up for them in some other way.

Got domesticated in Eurasia, for riding and pulling stuff, then got reintroduced to the Americas after Europeans arrived, where some escaped and became the wild (actually feral) horses of America today. What a round trip!

@beecycling
similarly, camels and dromedaries have adaptations for eating cacti even though they do not live where cacti grow

@charlotte Ah yes, they're another North American origin animal. But haven't made it all the way back around to the starting point again! Which is fair because I also wouldn't want to sail across the Atlantic in a wooden boat full of camels trying to kick me the face every time I went near them.

@beecycling @charlotte that's what I came here to add! We've really done a number on our large herbivores in North America
