@mynameistillian "grabatrons" are the technical term for lego hands

knowing a language closely related to another one is such a fucking trip

there's also false friends all over, in russian чёрствый (chörstvyi) means stale, while in czech čerstvý is fresh. so imagine my face when i was in a kaufland and saw a corporate stock photo ad for stale apples

@mynameistillian This is both funny and interesting as how things get named.

Have you learned yet everyday Czech things named after past alternative medicine practitioners or British brands?

@mynameistillian No Czech examples I'm aware of, but the Polish word for shower is (with a different spelling) the surname of Vincenz Priessnitz, and the (safety) bicycle is named after the Rover Company.

@mynameistillian my experience with Dutch all the time

"nuttig" in Dutch means useful. "nuttig" in German means slutty, whorish

@navi @mynameistillian the context in which I encountered this was someone's photo on a dating profile with the caption "I just did something useful" but to me it read like "just did something slutty"

@schratze @mynameistillian I currently mix up nervig and nervös. They both sound *close* to “nervous” but one means “annoying” and the other actually means “nervous”

„Bist du nervös?“
„Ja, ich bin nervig“

@ericjames @miifox @schratze @mynameistillian I had to look it up. Then I remembered that there ist the German word Heuer (the money a sailor is paid) and I assume they're related.
