There is no meaningful difference between "border security" and the idea of "one group primitively kills another group when they enter their territory".

We've just dressed it up in institutional language and outsourced the cruelty to those who like doing it, so that we don't have to watch it happen and can pretend it doesn't. So that we can pretend it is 'humane' and 'reasonable'.

Just like I'm sure every group historically made up some moral justification for killing other groups.

you know which country is being *vastly* more difficult about "ability to house migrants" than spain? the netherlands. which on every economic metric would be *more* capable than spain

but no, we "just don't have the housing capacity", please don't look too closely at the 20 years of bad housing policy and refusal of the government to take its responsibility as a housing provider seriously because 'teh free market'

@charlotte @joepie91 kinda sounds similar to the situation here in Germany too. Except for the restrictions on living together, I don't think we have that in Germany, having roommates is perfectly legal here as far as I know.

@charlotte so we *do* actually have a lot of mechanisms for dealing with shitty landlords, it's just that a) temporary housing contracts (now finally mostly banned) were exempt from them, and b) because of their proliferation, people seem to have collectively forgotten what you *can* do with normal rental contracts

like for example, almost nobody seems to remember that if all else fails and you've tried all reasonable steps, you can literally just hire a contractor at reasonable market rate to fix the issue and just withhold rent equivalent to the cost

(I have actually done this in the past with a landlord who was being shitty about the deposit, I just didn't pay the last two months of rent or so, roughly equivalent to the deposit)

@LunaDragofelis @joepie91 i think the german housing market is only regionally fucked, unfortunately the regions are whereever you can find jobs. also it massively prefers long-term renters (my parents could not afford moving to a smaller apartment, even if it is in a worse part of town)

meanwhile i don’t think i would be able to find a place to live in NL with my current budget and my gf’s place is not accessible to me either
