honestly the -gnu targets are objectively silly

-msvc is just the standard windows target, compatible with everything you’d expect on windows (that would be all of the windows libraries and 3rd party libraries). except for ones built for the -gnu target of course. which themselves don’t support -msvc libraries fully. those are two separate ecosystems because proprietary bad.

(third party compilers for windows also just target the msvc abi and libraries, it’s just anything that wants to be compatible with gnu stuff that doesn’t)

@sodiboo @halva Linux kernel is mostly trash. QNX was a good kernel. FreeBSD before Apple poached the lead dev (then absolute trash after that). BSDi was rock solid. IRIX was rock solid too. Linux is a mix of weird experiments and bloat. Worked at one large ISP and got daily crash reports... Linux crashes about four times as much as Windows does.

@scrottie @sodiboo @halva tbf, this one believes that Linux usually doesn't crash if one doesn't abuse it. however, it fully agrees that Linux's base resilience isn't exactly great. to be honest, it feels like the kernel is a giant playground at this point, intended for just throwing things at the wall and then unsticking them during a kernel cleanup cycle.
