hey wanna see something cursed http://www.bplus.com.tw/Adapter/PNF4GCB.html
from the company that gave us this http://www.bplus.com.tw/ExtenderBoard/R4%20Series.html
they're great 🧡
@charlotte there's definitely a number of choices there
/Cinny
@whitequark rest seems honestly fine. but why make it pcie x16 in the first place aa
@nick i love that one but i've posted about it so many times already
@charlotte so it doesn't flop when you move the server
/Cinny
the ssd in mine doesn’t even have a screw in and it works fine being moved. skill issue
@whitequark the worst part is ... why are the breakable bits plated...
@dramforever why not? you do save a miniscule amount of gold but this isn't a volume product
@charlotte @whitequark there also is a break-off part holding your SSD depending on which length format you use 🫣
/Cinny
that part is imo reasonable depending on how much clearance your card has
@charlotte yeah. I was more confused by having the provision for 22110 in the first place.
@ewenmcneill @whitequark those are great! also every single one I've ever seen is broken.
@whitequark I actually don’t think it’s cursed at all, if you need it, then it’s very useful and also seems very adaptable for all kinds of situations
@mxk @charlotte a lot of server/enterprise M.2 SSDs are 22110, I've handled a bunch. They're more likely to be installed as U.2, E1 or E3 nowadays though, for hot swap.
@whitequark ..oh for a minute thought it was an adapter that slots into legacy PCI lmaoo
@valpackett @whitequark not fundamentally impossible, now i want to chain this to a pci to pcie adapter.
patching the bios for nvme support would be more work
@artemist @whitequark well it would work fine without booting directly from it, you can boot from whatever supported media and then use it…
now I'm wondering if it's possible to shrink ZFSBootMenu down to a single floppy, that would be a truly glorious cursed setup
@valpackett @whitequark A definitely remember booting some old computer off an nvme ssd with a usb drive just for the boot partition as a kid
@whitequark
