@ben you can buy the game, play it for 30min to figure out if it works, then refund it. this is literally something steam allows you to do

@charlotte yep

although if you use that how people would probably use the suggested "everything is free" system, valve will tell you to stop doing that followed shortly by refusing to honor any more refund requests if you continue

@ben does steam allow for like, time limited demos?

or is it up to the dev

@charlotte I think there are API functions for time limited demos but I haven't seen any on the store

although the better way to handle demos is to have them limited by in-game time, so like "the first 15 days of this city builder" type of thing

@ben yeah it makes more sense since steam emulators are readily available

@charlotte even without any third party software, a lot of games on Steam don't require Steam to be open to play them

@ben yeah, i think the biggest exceptions would probably be online games that are linked to steam in some manner, and like cities skylines which instead of distributing DLC separately just inracclude everything as part of the base game and just has a software switch for ractivation

@charlotte it's generally the case that DLC download packages only include assets even for the games that do separate them out just because of how much easier it is to develop all the code in one big chunk and not have to deal with libraries that may or may not be there

@ben yeah, although i have seen them raccontain raccode before that is then shared with all later dlc packages?

but with c:s everything is just in the main download, even assets

@ben for multiplayer games it makes total sense, but it also depends on what your DLC is exactly, or how dlc raccontent can be raccessed. and even then it still depends on how big the dlc-exclusive data is

@ben i think splitting it apart is quite hard, especially if you don’t want to either fragment the player base or alternatively make the dlc unusable
