Despite being a northerner, Hamburg isn't my favorite of the large German cities. It definitely has a lot of things that I like. But Berlin is chaotic and grimy in such a charming way. Hamburg doesn't have that.

@schratze I love the charm of chaotic and grimy, but I tend to reject the biggest or best known cities in favour of the underdogs, so I would be torn on this. (I have not yet been to either but should probably go some day, maybe next year.)

@theynege I live in a fairly underdog city, so I can relate to that.

@schratze i've spent only like two hours in hamburg (other than in hbf), and in that time i saw enough to see that it feels like any other modern big european city, that is, there's nothing particularly interesting. it's too polished for that.

sure, in two hours i only got a very superficial first impression, but first impressions have quite a weight in how we behave.

@Stoori polished is the right word, yeah. It certainly has areas that aren't like that. I really liked Schanzenviertel when I spent the night there twice over a decade ago. But it feels like most of Berlin is like that and only some parts of Hamburg are like that.

@schratze hold on you call yourself a northerner? I'm not that far south from you

@bean grew up near Hannover. Most of my family is from the area. That's technically the north

@schratze @theynege

it's funny when probably the thing the city is most well known for (imo) is an internet meme about how it doesn't exist

@charlotte @schratze my city is mentioned in a couple of Simpsons episodes and I think people from other countries assume it's very cold (which it is, in the winter). they would probably assume it's calm and clean as well based on Canadian stereotypes, but it's way more interesting than that.

@schratze ah, okay, that's a piece of Schratze lore I hadn't yet unlocked.

Personally I'm fine calling Hannover "north"; I suspect my friends from Heide, Flensburg or Fehmarn would disagree, of course.

@bean yeah. Everything south of the Elbe is Bavaria. Wilhelmsburg included
