as a developer i will forever make fun of developers until they either stop trying to mislabel themselves as engineers or until they follow similar testing and certification rules as actual engineers

@charlotte Engineer is literally a degree here that I have officially... IMO there is quite a difference between most 'self proclaimed' developers that at most studied an adjacent field and a proper software engineer that studied specifically for this field.

A lot of my colleagues are like that and they can be incredibly good developers, but the broader scope is a struggle for them. Any developer can do pure coding, but when it comes to algorithms, understanding system software or anything low level and problem analysis....

@maruno as someone who is technically studying development [bachelor of science] i can state pretty well that it doesn’t really prepare you for programming. Sure, you might be able to implement some algorithm in java afterwards, but this doesn’t teach you any good development practices and the like

@charlotte That depends on the education, German higher education is more theoretically oriented than we got here. But also a programming language is just a tool, which you should be able to learn by yourself, no? :P

@maruno I thought the whole idea of my uni is that it’s more practically oriented. We did do programming tasks and i guess i was just too far ahead because i did not find them particularly challenging or interesting

@charlotte In comparison I had semesters in which you follow 25-50% classes and the rest is performing a full software project within a group with deliverables counting towards certain subjects.

We even had a semester where all we did was perform a project for an external stakeholder including setting up the contract, SRS, the software itself and the manual for the software. And working in an agile methodology including even doing a personal software process with a development plan and peer reviews.
