@derPUPE Wait. The last one is USB2-specific? I thought USB2 was strictly a protocol/wiring upgrade and didn't introduce any new connectors?

@joepie91 @derPUPE nah it’s the standard peripheral-side (type b) port for usb 1 and 2

@charlotte @derPUPE @joepie91 if it would be: usb1, usb3, usb1, usb2 that would've been extra cool :)

@wmd @charlotte @derPUPE (That's what the alt text says, hence the question!)

@joepie91 @charlotte @derPUPE oh... That seems off? I figured it would be (and is): usb-A, usb-C, usb-A, usb-B.

As usb-A and B where used at the same time in the usb1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 times.

@wmd @joepie91 @charlotte @derPUPE yeah, you're correct. The alt text is wrong

@vikxin @wmd @joepie91 @charlotte @derPUPE Yep. The connector type is not an indicator for the generation of the protocol used. Fun fact, most of the cheap USB-C cables you can buy are only rated for USB 2.0 speed and meant for just charging a device. Then there are USB-A connectors that support 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 gen1-2, 3.2 gen 1-2, etc. The only one here I think might be true is the USB-B connector which was 2.0 because the 3.0 spec variant has an additional bit at the top to support more data lanes.

@wmd Yeah, most likely. Can't say I've ever seen or used any 1.0 cables personally @vikxin @joepie91 @charlotte @derPUPE

@sudaksis @wmd @joepie91 @charlotte @derPUPE USB B definitely existed on printers before USB 2.0

@wmd
It's 1/2, 3/4/Thunderbolt (with some devices and/or cables only doing 2 for some godforsaken reason), 1/2, 1/2... which is a bit convoluted :D

@vikxin
I've got an old-ass scanner with B... I'm not sure if it's pre-2 era. I may try to find out when I get home. Also some old audio/MIDI stuff that most definitely only runs at 1.1.

@ozzelot @wmd @derPUPE @joepie91 i think c supporting usb 2 too is completely reasonable. most devices do not need 3 and it’s significantly more expensive

the joke is that it’s type a, c, a, b though

@charlotte
Yeah, I do kinda agree that my Nokia 3210 4G would have little use for USB3.

(Maybe someone has a big SD card in it and uses it to store massive amounts of data. Who am I to know everyone's use case for the 3210.)
