I used to think wine (the thing that runs Windows executables on Linux) had to do a lot of pattern matching and rewriting of the instructions.

After all, wine is fermented greps.

@soatok a funny thing about gentoo is how they put wine under app-emulation

wine stands for “wine is not an emulator”

@arch @soatok it makes a bit more sense tbh, some even support cpu emulation

but wine is Essentially Just a different program loader and a bunch of runtime libraries. no more emulation than the gnu part of what the most annoying subsection of pedants describe as gnu/linux
