@Loosf I'd say Signal over Matrix for privacy and security, but. Whatever is open source and not corporate seems like the best idea right now.

@Loosf @lilacperegrine @toydrgn sorry for being entirely unhelpful about this but matrix.org as a server fucking sucks and i hate that basically every client is trying to funnel you onto it and the option of “just self host it” is the only thing i tried aside from that sorry
