i found milk in the supermarket that read “lasts longer”

it was refrigerated. implying that it does not, in fact, “last longer”

i suppose it ”lasts longer“ than untreated milk but the comparison point here is UHT milk which lasts 3 months unrefrigerated if sealed

@charlotte You have no idea how German this comes across. xD I already imagine an Aldi aisle in my head thinking of UHT milk haha

@maruno UHT tends to be more common in southern europe, and a lot of germans do drink pasteurized milk instead of UHT

@charlotte I have not seriously seen it used in over 10 years here, I think it's mostly considered as an alternative for coffee creamer maybe? Most Dutch households go through enough milk for sure that we do everything fresh and have the most options for it's use.

@maruno UHT improves storage conditions before it is opened

means you can transport and store it without using any additional power for cooling. which is definitely useful when you do just have several days in a row where you cannot buy any groceries in germany. plus this means that you can buy milk in bulk

@charlotte @maruno I’d love an option to buy 500ml UHT milk, it would make storing it at home and using only what I need a lot easier.

@evi @maruno ah i should add, after you open it it still tells you to use it within a few days but i suppose it probably is gonna be good for longer

@charlotte @maruno yeah, that’s why a half litre would be SO much better than a whole one; I don’t ever need a whole 1000ml of milk and will have to throw the rest away after sitting in the fridge for a week. Such a waste.

@charlotte Yeah, but you just have 2,5L jugs here of fresh milk too. Should be good for some days. :P

@maruno they do take up 2.5x as much space as a uht milk carton in the fridge
and if you have multiple you can’t just store the ones you haven’t opened outside the fridge

@charlotte yes basically it's "lasts longer than that classical milk which however we don't sell anymore" https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESL-Milch
