How much electricity does the Fediverse waste by not being on One Big Server? In a time where Artificial Intelligence uses about as much as the Republic of China, we should become more conscious about our computing economy. We should become cucked like Bluesky.

@kaia it’s hard to add nuance to a striking 4 word headline but it’s not about decentralized vs centralized services but instead hosting things on One Server as opposed to several rented cloud servers

@charlotte @kaia it still applies to decentralization. Decentralization is extremely wasteful unless you’ve decided centralization is a sociopolitical risk. If someone doesn’t care about anti censorship for example they shouldn’t care about decentralization because then why pay the extra cost in power and compexity

@charlotte @kaia to be clear what I mean is yeah that’s not what the article is about but you can reference it in a related topic. I guess you can’t really scale up even a monolithic architecture to the capacity of the current 18 thousand or so fedi servers
