This was inspired by an argument that I had recently(ish) about "why can't LLMs do this". An LLM defender told me that "LLMs see in tokens, they can't count letters". And my thought was, but they have a lot of tools available for them through the harnesses! Why can't an LLM write a quick program to count the letters?
And so I decided to check WolframAlpha, and lo and behold, it actually knows that I want a substring count.

I guess this isn't entirely fair. WolframAlpha seems to just have a specific "substring count" tool. If you gave an LLM one of those, it could probably count the number of letters?
But WolframAlpha is also heckuva old. And it kinda shows that our* "AI" technology hasn't much evolved beyond "parse the text and pick a built-in tool".

* By this I mostly mean, commercially-available ones. There might be AI tools that can actually compose/make tools, I don't know.
