this is a great illustration of gimp: a tool that is technically capable of whisking and mixing but with horrid ergonomics bc it was designed by an engineer and not a chef

miifoxKrita is the obvious answer for artwork, and i'm myself pro-Aseprite for pixel work (hey, open-source software can still be commercial!); whereas for photo work something like Darktable comes closer (it's more of a Lightroom than a Photoshop replacement, but it takes some cues from Photoshop to be much more powerful than a simple set of sliders). For prints and publishing there is both Inkscape and Scribus depending on your needs, and if you use Photoshop for website layout design you should be banned to the seventh layer of hell.
Meanwhile GIMP kinda just... exists. I don't know anyone that uses it in this day and age, it always felt more like an engineering exercise than a practical tool to use (as mentioned in your excellent article), but there is probably a dying breed of gnu's who swear it's the solution to everything under the sun.
Photoshop already is a very messy program to learn as a newcomer and GIMP takes that philosophy up to 11 thanks to the wonders of "designed in an university according to some vague philosophy that made sense in 1989". But as long as there is someone to maintain it it'll keep on existing, and there will always be fools who will love it for one reason or another.

fluffykittycat@furry.engineer@woof maybe it's time someone simply Forks it and then takes the project in a New Direction, the underlying bones are probably good enough to craft into something usable as a Photoshop replacement and you can leave behind the culture and other problems that make it not suitable for the purpose people wanted to be suitable for. I'm not a professional so I really don't have a horse in this race, everything I need image manipulation for for gimp does perfectly

also gimp is fine, it's clunky sometimes but it works and it's fucking fine and i've never NOT been able to do something in it even if the method was stupid

@wyatt gnu imp has a reasonable way to make plugins and it should lean in that much harder, making into something more like emacs, but for editing images

@wyatt what's more is then allowing usage of more "internal" filters would make sense: allows you to quickly test out how you want your filter to be, and most filters rely on those, and you'll probably want to compose them somehow
funny how photoshop and gnu imp are both utter bulshit specifically because they don't do that well
