@charlotte i mean it make sense in phones where they bin the 50mp sensor to 12 mp down anyway

@Jonly
it really doesn't, it still uses the 12MP of the mislabeled 12MP sensor

@charlotte both pictures are gonna be 12 mp but if i crop the 1x one to the view of the 2x its gonna be worse

@Jonly
the other one is upscaled to match res

i don't think the 50MP of my phone is real, it's hard locked to the now unsupported moto camera app on specifically the stock rom

@charlotte i believe fairphone this is 50mp sensor, i just think the glas in front of it isnt good enough for 50mp

@Jonly
either way, 50MP mode is inaccessible, so digital zoom doesn't use it

@charlotte bad compromise: non-destructive digital zoom, stored in an exif tag or something like how rotation can be

@socks @charlotte this is not as unreasonable as you'd think, in fact this is something the fuji GFX does and that's a very expensive camera. my pentax will however throw away the data outside of the square crop i occasionally shoot most of a furry convention in, which does save memory but means i can't go back to uncropped in post

@miifox @charlotte oh if that's actually a thing that's pretty cool
I guess my concern would just be it has to be made very clear that that's happened, lest you be throwing around inflated files with everything outside the crop still included
Which is bad both for filesize reasons and bc you might have sensitive info cropped out, idk
though, I'm not entirely sure how fancy digital cameras work anyway. Probably produces some sort of digital raw that you have to process first anyway, right?

@socks @charlotte yeah if you export from darktable or lightroom the things outside of frame won't ever see the light of day. but if you go to crop you'll see the crop gets applied by default... i think, i don't have one of these camera's either

@charlotte
Agree.
This is also a reason I use OpenCamera.

Digital zoom is just an upscale algorithm. It is better than the early days of the technology, but by that, I mean a zoomed picture looks like an oil painting instead of TV scan lines. It's not a realistically better resolution, just a waste of space on averaged edges.
