The history of the word "gender" is very strange. It historically was a synonym of "category" or "kind", in a similar way as the cognate word genre, but due to the grammatical concept of gender somehow managed to escape and now has a much, much narrower meaning.

vikxin@beach.city@rantingsteve did you know that the word insect comes from Latin meaning "divided into sections", referring to the tripartite body plan of insects (head, thorax, and abdomen)? I believe it's a calque of the Greek word entomos, which has a similar meaning (-tom generally meaning "cut" when used in English words, e.g. phlebotomy means "vein cutting").

THERE ARE ACTUALLY THOUSANDS OF SPECIES OF WASP THAT LOOK NOTHING LIKE WHAT YOU THINK OF AS A "WASP". THEY ARE LARGELY SOLITARY AND PARASITOID. THEY WILL PARALYZE AND LAY EGGS IN A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF SPECIFIC SPECIES, DEPENDING ON WHICH SPECIES OF WASP IT IS. AS SUCH, PARASITOID WASPS MAKE EFFECTIVE PEST CONTROL.
