@charlotte and this is why I don’t switch to hosting my websites on my homelab

@fluffy bandwidth wasn’t the issue but it made my server nonresponsive (which would have happened sooner in the cloud because my home server is a fair bit stronger than online cloud servers i could afford)

the fix is that i took down the mirror of qmk_firmware, it would be great if git forges weren’t massively resource hungry and placed stuff like blame or diffs behind login. you can just download the darn thing and check it locally, i would much prefer that actually

@charlotte yeah and I need my homelab server to be responsive for the things I run on my homelab

@charlotte the nature of ai crawlers is such that while the bandwidth consumed isn’t too bad, it’s made managing CPU resources an absolute nightmare. Nothing else has done a better job of demonstrating just how much impact a lot of small, individual HTTP connections can be on website performance

@fluffy yeah i think out of everything i host only my git site has the particular combination of “extremely high amount of pages linked in html” and “expensive unauthenticated and unratelimited endpoints” that makes it sucky

currently my website is hosted directly on a CDN but when i get around to writing a real backend it’s probably going to be optimized for bad/malicious scrapers in mind (think: static file host with authenticated web api endpoints that start an SSG)

@charlotte The recurring issue I have is that my tag browser makes for a combinatoric explosion of valid URLs. My individual pages aren't super expensive to render, but when I have tens of thousands of residential proxy addresses hammering my site all at once it still falls down.
