I live in an apartment managed by a coop that was formed by workers over a century ago to provide other workers with housing.

I just joined a sports club that formed as a result of the failed democratic revolutions of 1848.

Leftist and liberatory struggles from ages ago continue to impact my life positively even today. And that's not even mentioning the 40 hour work week and all the legal protections they fought for.

Yeah the 1848 revolution was also nationalist, but that was at a time when nationalism was a progressive force that was opposed to monarchism

@schratze

i wonder how a 19th century german republic would have played out

@schratze idk there is just a lot to factors to this so it’s hard to theorize i guess

the austro-prussian and franco-prussian wars would have not happened, although maybe austria-hungary would have attacked germany anyways because their existence would likely be a threat to the austrian crown

WW1, if it happened, would probably not be a world war. If germany included austria then perhaps nothing would have happened after the assassination of archduke ferdinand, if it didn’t maybe some local scale conflicts. germany might have taken the side of the entente if it did escalate to that extent. I think prussia caused/intensified a lot of the tensions inside of europe by provoking other european countries into attacking them and losing in their conquest for unification

the 20s and 30s in germany might have been prosperous, without hyperinflation or massive war debts. Monarchist and fascist forces would have also not been empowered by the dolchstoßlegende, although fascism would still be a massive threat. assuming germany’s politics moved past nationalism, neither fascist purges nor ww2 would have been nearly as murderous as they have been in reality

@charlotte we might very well have seen a world war with fascist France and Russia sandwiching communist Germany from both sides. That wasn't too far from happening in our world

@schratze Yup. People should keep fighting the good fight and not succumb to doomerism. Even if we fail to overthrow the system, whatever positive impact we make WILL save lives regardless.

@schratze This was nice to read both as intended and by imagining how organized and helpful some chicken coop is.
