This website made entering a state mandatory. Why? Then it made me select from a drop-down list of “states”, which was just a list of every council area in the UK. Ergo, I apparently live in the State of Birmingham

@yassie_j As someone who has to design web forms for work I feel this. It’s like, if you know your product is going to be used outside the US, you can put a little extra thought into the form. If the country is set to United States, THEN show the state field. otherwise hide it. Sure it makes the processing data part more complex but not THAT much more complex

@yassie_j meanwhile aliexpress wanted my canton instead of my town last time I ordered. at least it was still able to get delivered, ig street + number + post code is unique enough in switzerland, despite multiple towns being able to share the same post code

The minimum in the UK is number, street, postal town, and postcode. Anything beyond that, like county, region, nation of the UK, is just extraneous

of course, in order to type this in, i would need the field to be long enough, to allow accented characters, and to allow dashes,
anyways, a french address requires none of that, you just need Name, Street number, Street name, Postcode, City name (if living in a small town only, any place that has over >10k inhabitants should have its own postcode)
and don't get me started in ireland, all you need is a fucking eircode. 7 characters, and you have a precise mailbox. i fucking hate website making me input ever single field in a US address when 7 characters is all you need!

@yukijoou yeah, an address in the UK is as simple as it is in France! There is no need to add lines upon lines of useless information between your settlement and “United Kingdom”
Eircode is really cool, and it just makes sense. Post is for delivery, so why not make it as precise as possible?

@ielenia not even that, these are just the lowest level of governance! So it’s a mishmash of cities and counties, but not the counties that the cities are in

@yassie_j i am currently in a weird intermediate kinda-unemployed-but-not-really state because the HR person needed to know to which “state” of the Netherlands i am moving to and this delayed the job contract. At least that got resolved faster than my legal gender marker being rejected by their systems :|
