i joked about doing a once per tech bubble crash upgrade cycle a few years ago… but i think now i’m doing it for real

wonder if am6 will be out by the time ram prices get cheap again

@Lamb it’s a pretty cyclical process by now. prices go up due to supply crunch, more fabs run up. prices crash as whatever fad caused the crunch ends.

@eri yeah, I hope is just that, but it looks to me like the cycles come more often and the prices never get back to how thy used to be (GPUs never really got to the pre Covid price brackets even counting for inflation). I fear the industry is moving away from consumer personal computing and the market will transition to renting cloud computing or something like that

@Lamb the toppest of the top of the line GPUs got more expensive but midrange ones got quite good for a bit before AI happened. i think nvidia specifically was just (and still is) being lazy and cranking up core counts and TDPs instead of doing actual engineering.

@eri @Lamb at this point I don’t think GPUs will ever go below 2017 pricing again (start of the mining availability crunch)

RAM is so absurd that it will for sure come back down, but just like GPUs, the prices will remain elevated regardless and stay that way

@eri @Lamb The MSRP price alone of what is considered a mid-range GPU since 2020 has more than doubled, and hardware is barely even available at those prices.

@eri
the pivot to real-time raytracing was imo just because they ran out of improvements to make for rasterization

and rtr is still just a gimmick lots of players tend to not turn on

and now they are padding the numbers with frame interpolation
