@sterophonick I use RZ616 and RZ717 cards with zero issue on Linux.
Currently Alpine Linux, previously also Gentoo, Arch, NixOS, and Bazzite without issue.

If the mediatek card in question is both individually good and well supported in software it’ll probably be fine, perfectly competent.
Otherwise however you’re in for a just awful time. The internal mediatek wireless card on my old laptop I had for a while kept randomly being slow, disconnecting and crashing in Linux with no discernable cause, not even dmesg would tell me why god had forsaken this card. I switched over to an AX210 from it and bam the headache was over.
In simmary just make damn sure the individual card you want to use is supported and supported well, otherwise you’re in for more of a nightmare than that AX210 could ever cause.

@jded i'm currently suffering from bluetooth firmware crashes with my AX210 on my AMD laptop. there seems to be very few threads on the subject and many of them say "downgrade your firmware." i'm not fucking maintaining that lmao

Hm, I’ve not had that issue yet, maybe it’s update day today for me, I have fallen behind a bit lately. Though my situation is slightly different in that I’m not running an AMD CPU, but an 8th gen Intel one, so maybe that’s part of the problem? Though, personally, I don’t see why it would be, this isn’t an AX211 or a BE200 which do have Intel CPU specific things about them that seem to prevent them from booting on some/most AMD or not recent Intel machines (sounds bullshit but I learned that the hard way).
Weird. Though fair warning, some mediatek chips currently only support either Bluetooth or WiFi but not both. There’s a reason I’m advising caution with compatibility checking here.

@sterophonick @jded with laptop cards one thing to note is that some vendors (particularly lenovo) have a built-in wifi card whitelist that afaik isn’t possible to circumvent

sterophonick@wetdry.world@charlotte @jded my lappy did ship with a certain set of cards and the AX210 isn't in that list. it doesn't stop it from working just fine sans the bluetooth firmware crashes
