hey

63% write alt text for all the images on your blog
18% write alt text and copy it to the title field as well
18% write captions that appear below the image instead

@ben the 3 serve different purposes but overlapping purposes tbh

copying alt to the title field is fine if you have no use for a second caption that only some folks are able to read. the text caption should imo extend the image and not restate what is in it. Sighted readers with functional internet will likely skip such descriptions and if you also use the caption to point stuff out in the image that is not highlighted there, they are likely going to miss that.

also omitting the alt text of an image causes many popular screen readers to generate “better than nothing” alt text that is [with unknown frequency] very bad and/or very wrong

and by "captions" I mean https://www.warframe.com/en/patch-notes/pc/43-0-0, not "figure 1: screenshot of video game"

@charlotte my idea was to mark the image as being non-semantic so screen readers wouldn't read it and then have the caption start with something like "Image description:"

I feel like since the blog posts are going to be about a bunch of different video games at once, a lot of people (sighted or not) would have no idea what they're looking at for some of the screenshots, so it'd be equally helpful in both cases

I wonder how many of the votes are the result of people only reading the first option and not realizing that all three options were "write alt text"
