People like to glaze Valve for being “consumer-friendly”, but Valve’s refund policy only exists because they got sued by regulators in Australia for not offering one. Valve then fought back against this, lost, got fined for it, and then implemented it globally. Bear in mind that at the time, even EA offered a refund policy.

Gaben fought against the legal right to get a refund for an electronic purchase

@yassie_j their treatment of indie games in germany is also bs

so like legally in germany games rated 18+ and games without an age rating (by anyone) are treated the same

which is why steam lets you buy 18+ games on steam, but not indie games which the dev didn’t fill out a questionnaire for

@yassie_j valve is a company like any other, it's just that they're the least shit of all digital distributors by a loooooooooong shot (aside from gog, allegedly, but that also has issues)

@yassie_j While true, I don’t think this changes the fact that Valve is currently the only major gaming company that’s not ghoulishly squeezing every penny they possibly can out of the gaming sphere with no regard for anything beyond the next quarter. That makes them 1000 times more consumer friendly than basically everyone else, the bar is in the boiler room of hell

@yassie_j @novenary
and just in case you had any thoughts it might’ve been an accident (somehow) they specifically didn’t send that email to german customers, where apparently those symbols are like illegal or something?

@novenary @SeaDonut yeah, they sent an email with symbols that looked like the Nazi lightning bolts. This subject line was not send to German-language users.
