I had a dream where most video recording software don't record actual pixels on the screen, but instead record objects in applications and their movement (when applicable). Like, if you're recording a 3D game, it'd record the objects' polygons in the scene and how they move, alongside with the camera movement (which you would be able to modify in post)

@fen that'd be kinda cool actually, if... very impractical lol

especially since you'd need an equivalent GPU or better to render the video at full speed

i like it though

@EeveeEuphoria @fen tbh i kind of want that for just layers of both videos and audio

put ui elements on a different layer, put sfx on a different track, player mixes them

@EeveeEuphoria In my dream it was an intermediate step between playing and publishing. You'd get some kind of "polygon movie" which you'd edit with some software to render the video. It'd use the game's files (with some kind of common-use protocol) to render the scene with the textures and stuff, and you'd be able to do standard video stuff like cuts and overlays and whatnot. Maybe even modify the models and textures

I think I just dreamed that every game is gmod

@fen for some reason this reminds me of gaussian splatting lol

@fen kinda like a source engine demo file? though that requires a copy of the original game and rendering it typically requires a full copy of the game to be running to interpret the demo file
