  • ipv4 local and link-local addresses are identifiable unlike completely random bogus ipv6 addresses

@jhwgh1968 setting up a local dns server might be annoying but you can also just point public dns records at your lan stuff unless you provision your network poorly (inraccorrectly)

@jhwgh1968 either way if i can’t enter something like printer.some-suffix to reach the office printer but have to enter ip addresses the network admin aren’t worth their shit

@charlotte @jhwgh1968 printer dot local should work if the printer supports mdns (most do since required for apple network printing, and works with both ipv4 and ipv6), which should be sufficient until your network is large enough to need a dedicated admin (in which case DNS is their problem)
