annoyed vegan rant

I think I might need to create a giant documentation website that covers every vegan gotchya that I can point to and then just link that at the bottom of every post I do about going vegan.

Like:

  • no you don't have to go raw to go vegan

  • no you don't have support plastic usage just because you don't wear leather or wool

  • yes it's still valid to be as vegan as possible even if you don't have control over you environment or have allergies

  • yes, I still believe indigenous hunting practices are valid and should be respected

  • yes, I still care about labor rights, even of veggie farmers, and I want them to have living wages, healthcare, pensions, vacations, and sick leave

  • no, we wouldn't have to grow as much food if we didn't have to take care of live stock

  • yes, I know cats can't be vegan with ease and yeah, I'm against breeding more cats too

  • yes, you can get protein from beans

  • yes, food deserts are a thing and we should fix them

  • yes, there were and are people of color who practice veganism either within their culture or outside of it

  • yes, bugs dying in veggie crop fields is sad.

  • yes, I agree we shouldn't murder all other animals around a veggie crop to keep it safe, including rabbits

  • yes, I'm against over use of pesticides and believe they should be regulated properly

  • yes, stolen land, even for veggie farming usage, is still wrong, because the land is stolen and yes, it should be given back.

  • yes, I think no-till and vertical farming are a possibility and yes, I agree that current large scale factory farming is unethical

  • no, I don't think being vegan gives you the right to buy israeli vegan meats

  • no, being vegan doesn't mean you've "decolonized", but it's a step in the right direction.

  • no, being vegan doesn't make you not racist. If you were racist before being vegan, you're probably racist now.

  • yes, you can have a safe and healthy vegan diet at any age.

I dunno, I'm probably missing some, but you know, I'm sure a non-vegan person will come to remind me what I forgot, because they always do...

@schratze @domo but that would mostly just be the meat substitutes, which is only a (replaceable) part of the meal neoraccoon_woozy

@domo

>no, we wouldn't have to grow as much food if we didn't have to take care of live stock

This one fucks me up because the opposite is true

>36% of the calories produced by the
world’s crops are being used for animal feed, and only 12% of those feed calories ultimately
contribute to the human diet (as meat and other animal products)

https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/8/3/034015/pdf

Feeding the world on a predominantly vegan diet would be a much more efficient usage of soil, arable land, labor and other resources needed for agriculture.

(I am not saying we should force the entire world to become vegan. Just trying to set the facts straight)

@charlotte @domo you can buy replacement products at stores that contain

>water, soy protein, pea protein, vegetable oil, vinegar, salt

But I'm sure that's worse for your body than eating bacon, salami and chicken nuggets /s

@schratze yeah, I get this one a lot. People think that it would be a one for one replacement of all livestock farm land with veggie crops, but that's just not the case.

@domo and even if it was, it would free up a ton of agricultural land currently used for animal feed.

@domo

yes, I still believe indigenous hunting practices are valid and should be respected

tradition for the sake of tradition shouldn’t be respected if it’s causing harm; why is this a yes, from a vegan standpoint?
please just generally elaborate also because i have only a vague idea of what you’re referring to here if that

@zaire @domo colonizers don't get to dictate how indigenous people live. That would be another attempt at erasing their culture. Let's not twist veganism into another vector for genocide

@schratze God, these people have never eaten a bean, and it shows.

@schratze @domo it might also reduce monocultures since humans are more picky about what they wish to eat (naturally leading to diversity in what is grown). might also be wishful thinking though

@domo haha. My favorite are people who say "I've never eaten anything vegan"

@schratze @domo so hunting animals is bad, but doing it in a traditional indigenous way makes it not bad…? is that all there is to that? i can’t really follow the logic here

@zaire @domo I personally never claimed that hunting animals was bad. I don't even think eating them is always entirely immoral. Predation happens all the time in nature. Why should humanity not be a part of that cycle?

Factory farming is the main problem, and that is intimately tied to colonialism and capitalism. And it brings all those issues of animal cruelty, overusage of land, environmental damage, labor rights, racism, and health implications with it.

If one person shoots a deer in the woods and feeds their family with it and turns its skin into clothes, I honestly couldn't care less.
