I’m going through the five stages of grief about this list. I knew it was coming. I reached out. It’s a very polite stabbing but a stabbing nonetheless.

There's just no way to make a list like that look good. When you're listing people and have an evidence column... you're in the witch hunting business. Doesn't matter what the original intent was.

@fasterthanlime “don’t use espeak-ng. there is no real alternative. just do not use the software you need to use your computer”

@fasterthanlime honestly kinda surprised that you went from making well thought-out educational/outreach content to using LLMs for stuff.

@c0dec0dec0de you're implying I've stopped making the former and... you haven't been paying attention.

@fasterthanlime yeah, that comment oversimplifies drastically. I still listen to your podcast with James and enjoy it. I think that on the whole you’re a thoughtful person and a good developer. I struggle to square that with using LLMs. But I’m a Luddite in multiple interpretations of the label. I think LLMs are a tool for massive corporations to bilk investors and to suppress tech worker wages. I don’t think they’re fit for purpose as “agents” or whatever and that if you want to use one to save time typing then you’re going to have to limit it to things that you don’t care about, or that you know cold and verify rigorously after generation.

@c0dec0dec0de so what's cool is that I (of course) have struggled with all these questions for a very long time and have come up with what I consider solid reasons to use them but I've refrained from posting about it specifically to avoid backlash from folks who will immediately label me a disappointment and move on, without trying to absorb the substance of what I'm saying...

...and now you (and others) are missing the context of why and how I use these tools. I have answers to all these. I would just rather spend my time writing about other things.

@piecritic @fasterthanlime and they list bsd as an alternative even though last time i ran freebsd i ran into a kernel bug caused by them improperly importing linux kernel code (graphics subsystem)

@fasterthanlime
I hope you do realize that this sort of sounds like "I've thought about the moral implications of this, and I think it's okay. Not gonna explain why, tho".

Having seen your reaction to the rustcon keynote drama, I had assumed that facet was in part motivated by moral qualms about dtolnay, not purely by the inconvenience of compile-times.

If that was never a part of your motivation, then quietly deeming LLM use acceptable is a consistent thing to do.
Otherwise, I don't really know how to square off those positions.

@hjvt I do realize that. It's a conundrum. Either I give a public explanation and then it promotes LLM usage, which is not necessarily what I want to do right now, or I don't and then everyone's free to think I'm full of shit.

At the end of the day, I'm never going to be pure/virtuous/ethical enough for everyone. Just like anyone who makes anything. This is death of the author all over again.

@fasterthanlime It's also ridiculous that their "evidence" about you is that you thought one particular model sucked less than other models, not that you actually use it or support its use

@fluffy There’s a lot better evidence to be found for sure. And I have been using them heavily. That’s not really my problem with it.
