okay. i said i was gonna install netBSD to my wii yesterday, but i lied, i didn't

but maybe today i will, if only to make it perform something really stupid for the sake of mild convienence

so... syncthing doesn't work on powerPC32. don't know why, they just said "lol we don't support it" and that's that. but, i am... a little familiar with rclone, and that can talk over SFTP, so whatever

idea: plug in an SSD into my wii, and have it act as a mostly-online backup solution... but the SSD is something i can just slip into my purse whenever i go out

could i do this with my computer? or, hell, *literally any fucking thing else*? of course

but it's funnier to turn the wii into a machine that backs up my data

this is almost completely practical-less, but i suspect it *will* function just fine

and it'd just be really funny to set a wii on my desk who's sole job is to backup my data

(i'll need to figure out if the machine will complain if the SSD doesn't exist when rclone tries to do stuff to it but that's a problem for later)

...only problem is i need to scavange around for an SD card

i tried to find that one i knew i dropped eons ago yesterday, but had no luck finding it

do not drop SD cards, they will transport into a pocket dimension and you'll never find them again :(

@EeveeEuphoria the programming language rclone and syncthing are written in doesn’t support ppc32 so unfortunately neither will work unless you somehow figure out how to use gccgo (idk how difficult it is or if it supports ppc32 either)

@charlotte neopossum_confused you don't run rclone on the machine that receives the files

you just run rclone on the host machine, it like, talks over SFTP, SMB, and shit

@charlotte well i mean you *can* run rclone on the recipient machine, iirc that is The Absolute Most Ideal Solution, but i haven't done that myself and it's worked fine

okay i'm now digging out a wii i can use for this, this is some random wii that was found somewhere idk

but it... has a parental control pin. first time i've actually ran into this, i think there's a way around this, so time to go look that up lmao

okay that was painfully easy to do

...the default internet connection has the SSID of "HydeMyJohnson"

okay i think this thing didn't set the paths correctly for whatever reason, pkg_add clearly exists in sbin

…and now i want to install zsh for a usable shell, since sh sucks

bad news: it’s a 4mb package

oh wait nvm that actually downloaded quick

i think it's because it was generating the list of packages and immediately compressing them, for some reason

which made the wii's CPU cry a lot i'd assume

or maybe it's just the write operations

maybe it's that

because this is just some junko SD card i've had lying around for as long as i can remember, because i literally have run out of good SD cards

considering this is taking a long-ass time to install zsh, yeah i think it's that

okay i think i might just give up on all this for now until i can bother to get SD cards that don't come from the era when they were starting to make 16gb sd cards that didn't cost a fortune lol
