@charlotte gotta extract that value somehow, Josef

right to repair is honestly useless if it’s non-commercial-only since most people aren’t tech savvy enough to repair their devices

sure you can probably teach users to do quite a bit but after a certain point you need vocational training

@charlotte IP-obsessed morons in the 3d printing space are always the worst btw. they make the worst fucking designs, post pics of shiny renders that ignore basic material properties, and then release it under the most obtuse and proprietary license known to man that you’ll violate by simply looking at a photo of the thing

also like printing replacement parts for your printer is only possible while it still works

so you either need a second 3d printer or someone else to print it for you

if you don’t have a friend with an accurate enough 3d printer you might want to get it printed at a commercial 3d printing shop

@eri yeah i am still trying to figure out what a good license is for what my ideal of software/hardware commons is

essentially for other makers it would need to be a two-way thing

i think taking from it and making something from it should also involve giving back

base your design on mine? let others do the same
sell my design for money? give me some of the profits
assist others in fixing my thing for money? your repair already gave back

@eri ip law and especially its implementations are not built to support this at all. but i think you get the spirit here. taking from the commons should also enrich it sooner or later

@eri the agpl for example is not a solution because it is used to restrict competition while also still allowing you to just sell it as a 3rd party with no need to give anything in return

@charlotte i personally stopped caring because i’m an anarchist and i realized that the people who steal your shit have more money and lawyers so they’ll win anyways.

idgaf about making money off this stuff i do it because it’s fun and i want to. why would i ruin that with capitalist bullshit. i sell things i make at sustainable prices as an excuse to make more things if people want more of them
