Vintage Story updated how animal bones work, so my genius plan on my latest world of starting a brush fire to harvest bones for bone handle knives from all the dead chickens and wolves ended up not getting me any useful bones at all 😭

This is what I get for trying to simulate extractive capitalism

@charlotte not this time!

Basically, in vintage story you can use bones to make a better stone knife. The bone handle knife cuts things a little faster and lasts a little longer than a standard stone knife and, also, I just think the bone handle knife looks neat.

It used to be that all wild animals in Vintage story would drop the same bones, but smaller animals had a lower chance to drop a bone than others. So, with this latest world (I tend to start a world, play until I have a cute house and bronze tools, then wipe the world and start over because I like the bronze age), I thought it would be smart to catch a prairie on fire. The animals in the prairie would catch on fire and die, so then I would go through the cleared valley, marking wherever I found native copper deposits and harvesting any bones I could find from the dead animals.

The new update changed the bones, however. Now, every animal has a high chance of dropping bones, but smaller animals drop small bones. Small bones can be collected and ground to make bone meal (useful for future recipes), but they cannot be used to make knives. I think the bigger bones only come from deer, elk, bears and boars now because none of the chickens or foxes had any, resulting in my burning down a big prairie, including a bunch of precious peat deposits, for no gain except some chicken and feathers and bush meat đŸ„ș
