Also disappointing to learn that the Ethernet module sticks out so far. I was hoping they'd made it compact like how it is on my HP netbook.

I should have gotten a USB-A module instead, and just planned on using a USB-C dock for the rare times I actually need ethernet on this thing :|

Anyway I'm probably gonna go with Manjaro on this one. I've been wanting something Arch-based but don't like how "hacker-y" Endeavour is

also I didn't notice until just now that the headphone jack is also a module. well *that's* annoying.

manjaro's download servers seem... unreliable, and slow. maybe I should go with endeavour after all :|

c'mon @frameworkcomputer surely you could make modules with more than one port on it

like you could probably fit both a USB-C and an audio port onto a single one

the modules are so perfectly sized that they are pretty much too large for anything you want to put on there once, but just forget putting two ports on there

also here's the clever Ethernet port on my crappy HP netbook (the only redeeming thing about that piece of junk). Framework could certainly learn something from this, among other things.

@fluffy @frameworkcomputer my thinkpad (t470) just got a full-sized ethernet jack with no moving parts. iirc newer generations ditched it in favor of a port that both needs a dongle and is single-function

it was surprisingly difficult to figure out how to disable secure boot on this laptop which you would think woudl have shipped with it disabled

okay these days is it better to use btrfs or ext4? I got the impression that btrfs is only really suitable for NASes and such and that it's considered EOL for active kernel development, but manjaro defaults to it for some reason

@fluffy unless you actually feel the need for more features than what ext4 provides I’d stick to it tbh

@fluffy Phoronix published some numbers recently showing that ext4 is significantly faster than brtfs, so honestly, if it wasn't default with Fedora, I'd be using ext4 as I don't really use any of the fancy features

You know way more about computers than I do, so it's entirely possible you do use those fancy features though

There also was a bug in brtfs recently that rendered systems unmountable, it was repairable but you had to go in on the command line and do stuff to repair your file system, so honestly, I'm not super happy that I'm on it since that seems like something that is not ready for prime time yet to me

and I take back what I said earlier, the keyboard is *awful* when used for more than a few minutes

guess I should see what framework's return policy is, because I'm finding my MacBook's keyboard way more comfortable. the framework12 keyboard just feels chintzy and weird and it doesn't register every keypress

@charlotte @fluffy I have literally never understood the port thing and it's been a massive turn-off every time I've looked at these, even before Current Events.

why would I want a weird huge passthrough for USB-C, or a USB-C dongle version of something in a weird, compromised formfactor

if you didn't have all the overheads of making it slottable maybe you'd have just fit a normal port in there :/

@charlotte @fluffy if it were still the 90s-00s and we were rapidly shifting from like IrDA and serial and parallel and PS/2 and VGA to USB and different USB and DVI and HDMI I might understand where this was coming from

but it's been "just put USB on there, lots of USB" for years and years now, and looks like it will be for the foreseesable, and when USB-C stops being the thing then the motherboard/chassis only having C *behind* the dongles will be the thing that has to change, solving nothing

@charlotte @fluffy (and yeah like fluffy said elsewhere in the thread, it's a great way to waste just a *ton* of space down both sides of the case that any normal laptop would pack with ports, *even a minimalist "legacy-free" mac*, so you end up with like one headphone jack and one USB and that's it, that side's full)

And yeah, from what I understand the module situation is a bit silly. Also, uh, how's 3rd party hardware other than a few modules, some 3d printed stuff, and a few gimmick LED PCBs? Iirc there's some riscv replacement mainboard but shrug?

Especially stuff like alternative keyboards. Swear there was something but might be misremembering...

@saphire It was a revision after use yeah. Typing on a keyboard that's turned off is very different than typing on a keyboard in actual use.

(yes earlier in the thread I said it felt comfy, that was just from me typing on it a bit while it was turned off and before I tried actually *using* it. Using it was a very different story.)

@saphire There was someone who designed and 3D printed an alternate casing for their Framework so they could handroll a mechanical keyboard for it but that's going a lot further than I want to deal with for this

@LionsPhil @fluffy i don’t even think that this is necessarily inherent to the modules. if they changed the size of the modules you could have a usable density of ports. at least the 13 inch would totally fit two extra current size slots too, but then there wouldn’t be much differentiation between the 16 and the 13 inch if you just need a portable computer and don’t particularly care about perf

@LionsPhil @fluffy also i think the reason why no double usb is probably because the interconnect itself is usb and usb hubs kinda suck and tend to be made for 3 downstream ports (if you could fit two usb ports on the module without most devices blocking the other port)
