@starlight you aren’t self hosting an instance though,,, “rent-lowering” implies you pay rent to exist on the fediverse. like I can make rent lowering posts because they would directly impact the resource usage of my VPS (which I don’t pay per cpu-minute but like I could downgrade it I guess). but you can’t because you’re on absturztaube for free. you already pay zero fediverse rent.

the ultimate rent-lowering gambit is to give up on self hosting and just migrate back to your first instance

@starlight she doesn't mean it literally though, maybe something about gentrification of the fediverse?

@sodiboo @starlight idk I think one can lower rent in spirit even without actually paying for your fediverse presence

anything that scares twitter users or companies away is rent-lowering behaviour

@charlotte @starlight i suppose.

i think i first heard the term “rent-lowering posts” from hazelnoot, who does host her own presence on fedi and literally has shown graphs like “sucess! federation go down 📉” . like, directly lowering her rent.

but i guess in real life it usually also means lowering rent for your neighbors. like three gunshots a day keeps the HOA away. you can even vandalise neighborhoods that you don’t live in. maybe don’t. but it CAN be a public good in certain situations. and it needn’t directly affect you. in this sense of “rent-lowering” then yeah any of us can do it; self-hosting or not. not just lowering rent for the instance that hosts us, but also for everyone else in the bubble
