Last boost, NixOS

I admit I am disturbed by what's going on in the community with .

Especially with the Military Industrial Complex connotations with Andruil being a huge part of the history of the community.

@vavakado I think because folks wanted to reduce the concerns in the community to "drama" rather than consider Foss's role in enabling and participating in the Military Industrial Complex.

Look at how many folks including NixOS will not

@onepict @vavakado There are a lot of serious issues in NixOS governance, but I actually wouldn't count Github use among them, as that's a bit of a complicated one - there literally doesn't seem to be anything else that can support the level of activity that NixOS has.

People have investigated things like Codeberg, self-hosted Forgejo, even Gitlab I think, and some other options, and every time the conclusion is the same - either it cannot support the project workflows, or it will outright break. Even Github breaks on nixpkgs with some regularity; HTTP 500s on specifically nixpkgs have been a somewhat regular occurrence, and a couple years ago it was literally like, the most or second most active project on all of Github in terms of PRs, according to Github's own metrics?

So if someone can come up with something not-Github that can support a project the size of NixOS without breaking the workflows too much, I expect that a lot of people would jump on it. Rolling a custom thing is probably not viable given, well, *waves at general situation with governance and community*

@onepict @vavakado Also, if this makes you go "huh it sounds really bad that there's such a hard technical dependency" then you would be correct, but also there are a couple more technical/financial dependencies like that where everybody is just kind of crossing their fingers and hoping they don't blow up any time soon because it's not like there's functioning governance to deal with these issues that have been known for years 🙃

@onepict @vavakado cache.nixos.org being a gigantic s3 bucket behind CloudFront that keeps growing and growing?

@joepie91
@onepict @vavakado I have only recently written a cleanup script for my own nix cache because they seemingly still do not have one

And it's not even that complex

@charlotte @onepict @vavakado Well, it's less a technical problem and more a social/political/economic one. Which is why it got stuck.
