@5225225, OID is actually very similar to a scheme this one came up with before, for assigning unique numbers to everything. basically it is the binary tree version of OID.

IDs are finite binary strings s containing at least one 1. when an entity with ID s wants to assign an ID to a new entity, they give out s with a 1 appended, and then change their own ID by appending an extra 0 to s.

to identify an entity, chop off all the 0s that have been appended.
