I never called it sideloading because I didn’t understand why something that has been completely normal suddenly needed a special term

It's only sideloading if it comes from the adb region of android. Otherwise it's just sparkling software install.

@jonossaseuraava @volpeon it seemingly derives from some ancient trademarked term for “transferring data from your pc to your portable device using a method other than physical media, or an internet download” which i suppose was a novel thing at some point but became utterly meaningless when mp3 players started being a thing everyone had

@jonossaseuraava @volpeon and yeah this ignores ofc that for most practical purposes non-gplay apps are just downloaded from the internet.
