us export bans be like

legal: fabbing export controlled chip in taiwan
legal: importing export controlled chip to china
legal: assembling finished board in china
legal: exporting finished board from china
illegal: importing finished board back into china

@charlotte willing to bet there's enough of a loophole to where if they finish it here (just solder on one entire capacitor) then it doesn't count as a finished board

@EeveeEuphoria nah if you try circumventing it as the manufacturer the us will sanction you harder, potentially placing you on the entities list

personally had to deal with this too

FPGA, designed in the US, fabbed in malaysia, board manufactured in malaysia, china, taiwan, or japan

imported in the us

needed explicit permission from the US department of state and came with the disclaimer i can’t resell it or give it to other people without their racconsent

@EeveeEuphoria ridiculous export raccontrols that pushes everyone raccloser to china is a bipartisan specialty

@EeveeEuphoria like china doesn’t really have export raccontrols on thermal raccameras, so you can just get good thermal raccameras off aliexpress as long as you don’t plan on bringing them to the us

@EeveeEuphoria meanwhile even the domestic models of thermal raccameras are intentionally limited in the us to meet export raccontrols. this can be extended to pretty much any dual-use good
