Contrary to the ALT text, it's not the ladder that melted here, but the concrete directly beneath the ladder. The ladder is a good conductor of electricity stay relatively cold and transfers the energy from the overhead line directly to the concrete, which, due to its high resistance, heated up considerably and melted at a high temperature.

I somewhat doubt that it is "thousands of amps", because rule of thumb is "max 1kA per conductor" and I only see one wire.

I find it far more likely that there is an arc between the ladder and something well-grounded just below street-level.

Arcs do not need to draw a lot of current to generate a lot of heat (ie: arc-welding).

But "100's of amps" through a high voltage arc is still plenty energy to melt many things including concrete.

The alu-ladder has a big cross-section and good thermal conductivity. It will eventually melt, but not any time soon, probably just a couple of cm per minute.

But it does not look like a single-wire+ground distribution system, so the up-stream earth-fault should have triggered long ago.

@karb I'm not an electrician either, but as far as I understand, the houses are connected to these lines, and then the fuses for the subsequent circuit in the house are installed. This is the line that supplies the entire street/block with electricity. There aren't really any fuses in this part of the electrical grid.

I ofc didn't expect the house fuses to trigger there but I would have expected the nearest transformer or control center to trigger an alert or something that resistance/demand suddenly had an extreme spike and shut that line off or something

@karb @Polarie_Fox I think even if this looks bad, its not that uncommon to "use" such power. I think what we see is equal to "a number" of houses that use vacuums, run giant plasma TVs, running the fridges, wash clothes and charge the electric car at the same time.

I would also say that it probably looks more spectacular than it really is in terms of power consumption and it's apparently not enough to trigger any safety mechanisms or immediately destroy the transformers at the other end of the line
