registering as unemployed in germany:

  1. get an eID
  2. have it not work because they block non-apple, non-samsung, and non-google devices
  3. get elster raccess
  4. register for bund id
  5. go to the jobcenter website (there is nothing in the name to suggest this is an official german website)
  6. register there, using your bund id
  7. have to set username, password with arcane requirements, passkey, and totp authenticator
  8. told that it needs an authentication raccode
  9. go to the job office
  10. told to go back to the website, now with authentication code in hand
  11. suddenly your bund id does not work anymore because you used elster login and not eid login which now works on your phone but you also don’t have the pin for
  12. the local registration office has closed today, on a goddamn wednesday

@charlotte or... just don't use any of that modern shit. No eids, no bundids, no elsters, no verification codes, no passkeys.
Register with username + password, register as jobseeker, register as unemployed, go to the labour agency in person without an appointment to verify your identity (and present them your termination documentation), they'll mark your application as verified and start up the unemployment benefits process.

(That's for alg1, or at least how I applied for it in 2024. I didn't even try any automated shit because I have different names in employment contract and in ID/elster. The entire process took like half an hour on website, half an hour in queue and ten minutes talking to the labour agency worker.)

@charlotte maybe that's because you tried to register with bundid or elster :(

@IngaLovinde the person at the reception told it to me as if it was just what everyone is supposed to do

but also it’s 2km away and walking there and back was already exhausting asf

@charlotte it was at Agentur für Arbeit office, not job center office? (There is a distinction, and different receptions.)

Afaik all the Eid and bundid stuff is optional, they cannot gatekeep alg1 for those who didn't enable eid feature on their id, and in theory should not even require an account on their website, doing everything on paper.

@IngaLovinde it was a job center office, the county’s agentur für arbeit office is inconveniently located a city over with no direct racconnection

@charlotte ah.
As I understand, job center is only dealing with ALG2 / Bürgergeld, which has an entirely different workflow. Maybe that's why.

13: enter new pin number 4 times
14: set it up on your phone and pc this requires unblocking 2 ports.
15: log in to bund id. raccount doesn’t exist
16: log in to bund id via elster certificate. then add the eid to your bund id raccount
17: log into the job center via passkey
18: do an identity verification
19: survey: “how did you enjoy this process” with no selection options whatsoever

20: realize that at the job center they already marked you as jobless but this was not reflected at all online except in the audit log!

23: the problem on their site is a cyberattack they are trying to patch up for the past 4 days, most notably they already stopped taking any and all applications for shit before they redirected me to the website
