my brother in christ, that’s the WARRANTY PERIOD on most server hardware, if your hardware dies after 5 years you go to a different manufacturer.

@aidan we use G8 Blades and those rarely ever fail, most we go through is SSDs, which we get brand new anyhow.

@blumlaut yeah like, my gf’s employer only recently decomissioned a database server old enough to vote, the main reason you’d decomission them is if they are genuinely no longer useful for their function

@blumlaut the main things that fail prematurely in these are probably the ancient hdds they come with but with servers of that vintage you can still buy replacements new from any electronics retailer
