Do any filesystems implement secure deletion? As opposed to running shred and probably wondering if what it does is relevant to modern storage technology or not, or possibly not knowing what storage technology your cloud based expensive thingy is running on.

@djm62 Shouldn't this be impossible for exactly the reasons you laid out?

@zvavybir maybe? I remember when you could read the sides of the cells on the spinning magnetic disk to get the old values, but that insecurity also represented an inefficiency: they could have stored more data on there! More modern magnetic disks made that kind of forensics much harder.

For current technology, I don't have a great handle on what the security properties of the storage hardware are.

@djm62 @zvavybir yeah for hdds you just have to assume that overwriting it once with random data is enough

for ssds there is no way really, some enterprise ssds return zeroes after a trim, but they can only actually erase blocks if everything around those blocks becomes unused as well
