@fincs I was reading about that the other day and Wikipedia said は is the topic marker (which I already knew) but が is a nominative case marker...? Which seems weird that the topic isn't necessarily nominative.

Meanwhile, every language uses the exact set of prepositions/postpositions/whatever in subtly different ways. It seems like a nightmare to try to get right.

@endrift @fincs the topic not necessarily being nominative makes sense: “I cooked the food” and “The food is tasty” both have the food as the topic, but in either sentence it takes up a different grammatical function

@charlotte @endrift Yeah I know it's topic vs subject. The point of my comment is that it's a famously tricky aspect of the language that takes a long time to fully grasp and learn
