to further compact your encrypted messages in your open source end to end encrypted chat app (better than signal) you should consider using HMAC-CRC16 instead of HMAC-SHA256

@charlotte HMAC-P. The P stands for Parity bit.

@Doridian @charlotte actually, since you seem to be unable to use UTF-8 anyways, you should use the 8th bit of every ascii character as a parity bit.

@miifox @Doridian that’s the entire rationale for why so much early internet tech is so terrible and i can’t tell if anyone actually did that because it’s actually a fucking stupid idea

@charlotte @Doridian am now randomly wondering how various chat-apps handle ascii 0 to 31 in details. does irc filter out vt100 codes, for instance?

@charlotte @miifox @Doridian a lot of early online tech is also "lets get something working now, and figure out how to do it right later" and never getting around to the later (possibly due to how widespread the thing already became so no longer possible to change)

Which is another reason I'm no fan of "move fast and break things" philosophy

@miifox @Doridian IRC doesn’t care about what you send in messages, as long as it doesn’t contain NUL, CR, or LF of course
