People: Why do you use light mode??? Light mode is so ugly!!! 😠

@Rusty honestly the only accessible option is to give the user choice. Folks may find one preferable or more usable for countless reasons like readability in different environments. And it can very per application and use case.

Heck during the pandemic I switched Twitter to light mode because dark mode was making me feel depressed.

@zoepants Yeah, and I'm really glad that the trend has been towards giving the user the option with a global system-wide flag blobfoxfloofhappy I always have it on light mode during the day and dark mode at night.

@Rusty Always funny how it's pretty much exclusively the dark mode enthusiasts who are oppressive about pushing their choices onto everyone else.

@ralesk Shout-out to Discord for making fun of people who use their light theme because it's bad, completely glossing over the fact that they're the ones who made it bad. neofox_what

@odoben @Rusty And windows modern, (though that is horrible in dark mode too)

@odoben @ralesk Meh, Windows 7 was mostly white on white, it just had a little translucence in the window borders to break it up. I wish LibAdwaita encouraged app developers to modify the stock stylesheet though with their own branding, or would do a sort of Material You thing. Anything but the basic whites and grays.

@Rusty This is so relatable :D

I remember having this type of discussion or, let's say "criticism", almost every day. The fun thing is that exactly those are the people complaining about not being able to see anything on their screen with maximised brightness.

Even as a developer, I use light mode during the day, dark mode often during the later hours drgn_happy

@RayuDW Yeah, that's exactly what I do blobfoxfloofhappy When it's bright out it's light mode time, when it's dark out I flip it to dark mode. I actually re-bound the Do Not Disturb key on my Macbook in both macOS and Linux to be my dark mode toggle. blobfoxthinkgoogly

@Rusty @ralesk Yes, having some colour can make a night and day (no pun intended) difference https://flathub.org/apps/fr.romainvigier.MetadataCleaner

@odoben @ralesk My standout example is actually Amberol pupper_wag I like that it changes based on the album art.

@Rusty That's a neat little trick there with the DND button :D

I set up a specific key combination for switching between light and dark mode on Windows and Linux. Just love to switch it quickly when I need it drgn_happy

@RayuDW Yeah, especially when I'm in a dark room and I open my laptop lid while it's still on light mode and it's like ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️✨✨✨✨ neofox_what ➡️ neofox_dizzy

@Rusty @odoben But it doesn't because The Gnome Way (white on white on white) Is The Only Way

@ralesk @odoben They're working on a theming API, but it appears like it'll be extremely limited. That said, Gradience is actually not too bad blobfoxthinkgoogly

@Rusty @odoben Win7 was at least still skeuomorphic and some of the "whites" were very much bluish or grey - much unlike the nonsense we have since win8 and beyond.

@ralesk @odoben I have a hard time comparing Windows 7 favorably to much, honestly. blobfoxthinkgoogly Windows 7 was better about breaking up the screen with more visual intrigue, but the skeuomorphism was really only in the iconography and the gradients on the buttons to make it more clear they were clickable, otherwise it was also pretty flat. Also, as someone who doesn't really like server-side-decorations, Aero didn't really do much for me since it didn't really factor into the application design and was mostly just on the shell.

@Rusty Who needs an alarm clock when you can have your laptop at peak brightness and enabled light mode anyways? drgn_3c_evil drgn_angel_blep

@RayuDW I actually use light mode to wake up blobfoxpatmelt2 The problem is when it's in light mode and I'm trying to wind down for the night. blobfoxsweating

@Rusty @ralesk unironically discord was the only application i used the light mode in before they fucked it up

@Rusty Feel ya there. Flash-bang confirmed ☀️

I tend to set times when the theme switched automatically when possible, so I can (mostly) avoid that.

Then getting surprised when I manually forced light mode at some time during the day and want to use my device during the evening... Well, grayscale filters don't really help out with getting flashed sadly :D

@charlotte @Rusty I've always found it godawful, but a whole lot of things are light mode for me (telegram, slack, the desktop in general) while a lot of others are dark (code editor, discord, mastodon)

@ralesk @charlotte I currently have our fork of Mastodon going off of my system flag for light/dark mode. Not sure if gusta blobfoxsipglare There's a lot of gray, but having a light browser headerbar and a dark webpage was starting to bug me for some reason.

@odoben @ralesk @charlotte I take it Premiere Pro doesn't have a light mode blobfoxthinkgoogly
