fedi meta, social media in general

I'm tired of seeing this myth everywhere that it's difficult to create an account on the fediverse

You open a website, enter a mail adress, user name and password, sometimes answer a vetting question, and there you go. You have created an account on the fedi

Anyone who is pretending that signing up on here is more difficult than on other social media is either being dishonest or talking about something else entirely

@schratze

I guess it's more the difficulty of choosing a random coffee shop instead of sticking to a predictable and unified starbucks.
Something like that.

This tendency to conflate "making software easy to use" with "taking control away from the user" is one of the fundamental problems with the digital world today.

@schratze it’s about the same as email. you never hear anyone say “oh god. i don’t know what to do. i can’t choose between google mail and microsoft hotmail. this stuff is too hard.” like, you just pick one and then you have email. same with fedi.

@schratze there's a bit of an obstacle there though, a lot of people will ignore you if you're on some big instance

I'm lucky to have found my place relatively quickly on a small instance, but a friend who started out on fosstodon got noticeably more interactions once he moved to self-hosting

ymmv I guess

@tauon
@schratze it's because most people don't consciously choose their email provider, it comes with their phone or computer. or employer or school

@tauon @schratze commercial social media is like the old salesman adage: the only reason the person hasn’t bought yet is they don’t have a pen, so your job is to put one in their hand.

Also, just like sales, when you actively don’t want something, commercial social media pushes it into your face until you give up and look at it just once.

Meanwhile you log into a fediverse instance and see nothing the first time, go to Local and see like three roots over the last week, then go to federated and see six.
